It’s the final concert of the 2010 Spoleto Chamber Music Series, and Geoff Nuttall has a surprise in store - instead of Schubert for five, he’s got Mendelssohn for Eight – the effervescent Octet for Strings. Before we get to eight, we’ve got a two-by-four: Bach’s Second Orchestral Suite, that is, as well as Four-handed Brahms Hungarian Dances.
The Orchestral Suite Sometimes called “Overture” – No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach, the badinerie has become a show-piece for solo flautists, due to its quick pace and difficulty. Featuring flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, joined by violinists Daniel Phillips, Scott St. John, Livia Sohn, Geoff Nuttall, and Shannon Thomas; violists Barry Shiffman and Lesley Robertson; cellist Alisa Weilerstein, bassist Ed Allman, and harpsichordist Pedja Muzijevic.
Hungarian Dances Geoff Nuttall calls them “pop classical classics” – four of the Hungarian Dances by Johann Brahms, in a version for piano four-hands. Hands that belong, in this performance, to pianists Inon Barnatan and Pedja Muzijevic.

Octet for Strings The magical Octet for strings, by Felix Mendelssohn, written when the composer was only sixteen years old. Hear it played by the St. Lawrence String Quartet plus four: violinists Daniel Phillips and Livia Sohn, violist Barry Shiffman and cellist Alisa Weilerstein.

Melvyn Tan: Piano Concerto No. 2 The Piano Concerto No. 2 by Beethoven, featuring pianist Melvyn Tan and the London Chamber Orchestra in a new recording. Christopher Warren-Green leads that ensemble, and he is the new Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
